Products and skin
There are many products available on the market that can help you do this. For the best results, you can try out some of the recipes that only include ingredients commonly found in nature. Before you begin scrubbing your skin, you should also consider the type of skin you have, what body part you choose to exfoliate and tools to use. The number of factors you need to consider may seem troublesome at first but the results will make it worth the extra effort.
Exfoliation Recipes and Tools
The market is flooded with various skin care products including scrubs, moisturizers and more. Determining which product is the best can be daunting. The list of ingredients is often filled with names that are difficult to read or pronounce. For a healthier alternative, try mixing your own batch of skin product. This will help you on your quest to find out how to exfoliate effectively. Products made from all-natural ingredients are not only cheap and easy to produce but they are also more potent and effective when applied on the skin.
One of the simplest recipes involves mixing honey and sugar together. The rough sugar granules remove the dead skin cells while the honey works as a moisturizer. Alternatives for sugar include ground almonds, oatmeal and salts. On the other hand, olive oil, milk and apple cider vinegar can work as cleansers and moisturizers. There are different tools which you can use to do the exfoliation process. Loofahs are a popular choice. It is a kind of gourd that has been used for centuries. One of its main disadvantages is that the loofah tends to accumulate mildew and bacteria when exposed to humidity for long periods of time. However, you can easily combat this by rinsing the gourd in a mixture of vinegar and baking soda. Other tools you can use to obtain smooth skin include exfoliating brushes, gloves, toothbrushes or even clean washcloths would suffice. If you are exfoliating your scalp, your fingers will do fine.
Proper Exfoliation Techniques
There is a proper technique involved if you want to know how to exfoliate correctly. First is the timing of the exfoliation process. Experts advise that the best time to exfoliate your skin is when you wake up in the morning. The skin undergoes a process of repairing itself while you sleep. Once morning comes, you wake up with a lot of dead skin cells on your skin, making it the perfect time to do some scrubbing.
You should start scrubbing before taking a shower. This will help remove more dry skin cells faster. Start from the bottom of your feet and work upwards to the top of your head using a loofah, brush or exfoliating glove. Once you have done some light dry scrubbing, get into the shower and hydrate your skin. This is the time to apply the exfoliation product. Gently massage the product for no more than 30 seconds then rinse with lukewarm water. Do not use hot water as this can damage healthy skin cells.
The right stroke is all you need to learn how to exfoliate better. Simply move the exfoliation tool in a circular motion. Although you are meant to scrub away the dead skin cells, you must do so gently. If you scrub too hard, there is a chance you leave the lower layers exposed to dirt and grime. Removing too much of your skin cells can also affect the way your skin heals itself, making it more prone to developing blackheads and acne.
Exfoliating Different Types of Skin
How often you should scrub depends on the type of skin you have. The following are the recommended number of times a week you should exfoliate, depending on the type of skin you have. You should not overdo the exfoliation as this can damage your skin further.
- If you have normal skin, two times a week should be enough to remove the dry skin cells.
- For individuals with oily skin, exfoliation should be performed at least three times each week. This is because the excess oil traps more dead skin cells, clogging the pores.
- Individuals with dry skin should take extra precautions when determining how to exfoliate their skin properly. The exfoliation process can take away the moisture on your skin. If you have dry skin, exfoliate only once every seven days and no more. Do not forget to moisturize your skin to replace any lost moisture.
- For some individuals, the T-zone area tends to be oilier than the rest of the face or the body. If this is the case for you, you may need to use different recipes for varying parts of the face. You will also need to exfoliate the T-zone more than the rest of the body. This means if you are normally exfoliating once or twice a week, then the oilier T-zone should be exfoliated at least three times on a weekly basis.
Your skin tends to become drier as you grow older. As such, you may need to change your recipe or product after a few years. You will also need to do it less often than you would if you were younger. All of these factors may appear bothersome but this is proper method of how to exfoliate to achieve smooth skin.
